Sustainability at Hinton Lumber
Building a Circular Supply Chain
Our Commitment to a Renewable Future
At Hinton Lumber, sustainability is more than a goal; it’s a guiding principle. We are dedicated to building a circular supply chain by producing high-quality, reusable wood pallets that minimize environmental impact and maximize efficiency. Our practices are rooted in responsible sourcing, innovative design, and a commitment to industry leadership.
Driving Sustainability Through Collaboration
As active members of the National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA), we contribute to advancing sustainable practices throughout the wood packaging industry. Hinton Lumber plays a leadership role in promoting wood as a renewable resource and advocating for data-backed sustainability standards through Nature’s Packaging. Company executives hold top leadership positions in these organizations, helping shape best practices and education initiatives at a national level.
Meeting and Exceeding Environmental Standards
At Hinton, responsible sourcing is a core principle in everything we do. We are committed to sustainability across our operations, and we offer additional certification programs upon customer request to formally validate each unit as responsibly sourced. These include:
- FSC® Certification SCS-COC-008496 – Verifies that wood comes from responsibly managed forests.
- SFI® Certification SFI-01875 – Confirms adherence to sustainable forestry practices.
These third-party audited programs involve ongoing inspections and added costs. As such, we provide them when specified by customers whose programs require formal certification. In cost-sensitive markets, offering these certifications without clear need can be counterproductive, but when validation matters, Hinton is ready to deliver.
Designing for Reuse and Efficiency
Our pallets are engineered for durability and multiple uses, reducing the environmental burden of single-use packaging. Multi-trip pallets significantly lower the carbon footprint per use and pallet cost per trip, offering both environmental and cost benefits over time. Standardized, reusable designs help customers streamline operations and reduce total pallet consumption while meeting demanding performance requirements.
Quantifying Our Sustainability Efforts
Through life cycle analysis and participation in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for wood pallets, we actively evaluate the carbon impact of our materials, manufacturing, and shipping processes. These tools offer customers a transparent view into pallet performance and help align sourcing with ESG goals. Hinton supports efforts by Nature’s Packaging and the Pallet Foundation to create and update environmental benchmarks for wood packaging.
Continuing Our Sustainability Journey
We are continuously exploring ways to improve environmental outcomes in our operations and throughout our customer networks. Our focus includes:
- Increasing use of renewable energy across production facilities
- Expanding recycling and material recovery programs
- Supporting customers with custom sustainable packaging strategies
- Investing in education and policy support through industry groups
Our commitment to sustainability is ongoing and backed by data, partnerships, and the pursuit of measurable impact.
